I won’t lie: my visit to the Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou was pure chaos. From the very first step inside, I was overwhelmed by a suffocating sense of crowding that stayed with me throughout the visit. A tide of arms, bodies, and voices flooded every corner of the temple, while the heat and the smoke of incense thickened the air until it became almost impossible to breathe.
When I finally managed to pull away from the crowd, I could observe that sacred chaos from a distance. The scene was both magical and unsettling: hundreds of worshippers encircling the central incense burner, reaching out to touch it with their palms, as if clinging to something intangible. A forest of hands stretching toward luck, hope, and prosperity; a fervor forcing its way forward through shoves and collisions. There, faith was not contemplated. It was felt.
This collection is just that: a frenetic and hypnotic portrait that reminds us that when faith burns, it also pushes.
